# What is dotlottie-io?

`dotlottie-io` is a library for creating, reading, and modifying `.lottie` files. Its core is written in Rust and compiled to two targets: a native Node.js addon (via N-API) and WebAssembly for the browser. Both bindings expose the same class-based API.

## The "-io" in the name

`dotlottie-io` only handles **reading and writing the `.lottie` container format** — unpacking, packing, merging, and querying its contents. It is not:

- A **player** or renderer (that's the job of the various dotLottie Players)
- A **design tool** — it doesn't create Lottie animations, only packages them

If you need to render `.lottie` files, see [dotLottie Players](/en/runtimes/). If you need to create the underlying Lottie animation content, that comes from a design tool like After Effects or a platform like LottieFiles.

## dotlottie-io will supersede dotlottie-js

If you have an existing `dotlottie-js` project, see the [migration guide](/docs/tools/dotlottie-io/guides/migrating-from-dotlottie-js) for a full comparison and code-for-code examples.
