Editing sections

Add, modify, organize, and remove items inside a motion system. Editing happens at the section level — colors, easings, fonts, motion presets, and asset collections each have their own editor with type-specific UI.

Note — Editing presumes a motion system already exists. You can create one in the LottieFiles web platform.

How to access this

  1. Open the LottieFiles plugin in After Effects.

  2. Click System in the top tab bar.

  3. Click the motion system you want to edit.

  4. Inside the system, click a section to enter its editor.

Section editor common patterns

Every section editor opens as a modal with three main areas:

  • Item list — existing items in the section.

  • Add new — input(s) to create a new item.

  • Bulk actions — delete, rename, reorder (where supported).

Section-specific editor variations:

Colors

Add a color item by name + hex (or color picker). Existing items show a color swatch and the underlying value. Click a swatch to edit; double-click to rename.

Easings

Easings use a curve editor or cubic-bezier input. Named elements like ease-out-quart map to one curve. Preview area shows the curve animating a sample.

Fonts

Fonts reference a font family + weight. The plugin doesn't ship fonts itself — referenced fonts must be available at the destination runtime (web font, system font, or bundled).

Motion presets

Motion presets are pre-authored animation patterns (fade-in-up, scale-pulse, etc.). Authoring a new preset is more involved — typically you author the motion in AE first, then save it as a preset.

Assets

Assets reference sets of assets (typically icon families). Each asset has a name and references the asset within.

Renaming items

Item names appear in the apply UI and in rendered output. Renaming is permanent — there's no rename history. If you rename an item that's already applied to layers in a composition, the application updates to the new name on next render.

To rename: double-click the item name in the section editor, or use the per-item settings.

Deleting items

Delete items via the per-item controls or the bulk-delete action. The plugin confirms before deleting to avoid accidental loss.

Reordering items

Some sections support drag-to-reorder. The order affects how items appear in apply menus, so put the most-used at the top.

Troubleshooting

  • Section editor won't save — verify you have edit permission. Workspace permissions can restrict editing of shared systems.
